I Do Wish
by dbdevilliers
I wish I had held myself together.
I wish I’d done better,
done more, been better.
Wished I could try,
now wishing I had.
Sure wish I’d spent less time
trying to wish away the bad.
I might’ve been something
had I been anything
to begin with,
but if there’s a God
his concerns are more
important
than I am.
He didn’t stack chips
upon any
of my plans
and I don’t blame him—
he’d have lost them.
I wouldn’t have placed
that bet
either.
God doesn’t, can’t help those
who help themselves
to repeated glasses of
bourbon and gin
and out from open windows, shout
slurred shouts, swearing skyward, said
“Well, goddamn! I never once wished for this!”
I don’t agree with the last part. God loves and cares for every one of His creatures. The Bible tells us that we are inscribed in the palm of His hand, that even the hair on our head is counted and none of it can fall to the ground without His permission. His eye is on the sparrow…He feeds them. What more of you who is created in His image? Read my blog.

Thank you for your insight! Personally, I’m not a religious man, but I often write from the perspective of one, primarily for stylistic purposes. I’m glad that you’ve been able to find peace through your faith. Regrettably, that path hasn’t proven to be my own.
